Horse Insurance
Horses are strong, powerful, beautiful animals and one of the most significant investments you will make in your lifetime. Whether you enjoy riding other people’s horses or if you own your own, they are costly. The financial outlay varies from to purchasing the horse, it’s upkeep, housing, riding and transporting it. If you wish to make a living out of owning or caring for horses the overheads are high and you will want to ensure you are covered for any potential risks. Ultimately if you own a horse or simply enjoy riding, it is important to obtain adequate pet insurance to cover yourself from potential financial losses.
Equine Pet Insurance
The type of insurance that you get for your horse falls into the general category of pet insurance. The key elements of horse insurance can be broken down as follows:
Horse Insurance – This covers you for the value of your horse and vets bills. Insurance will provide a Maximum amount of cover per incident e.g. up to £3,000 (plus up to £1,000 for vet recommended acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, laser treatment, ultrasound and remedial shoeing).
Equine Mortality Insurance – This is life insurance for your horse if the unthinkable happens and it has to be put down due to an accident, illness, or disease, or is not found within 28 days of being stolen or straying. Be aware that it is unlikely you will be able to claim on a policy for illness/disease showing clinical signs within 14 days of policy inception. Cover itself is often up to the sum insured or market value (whichever is less).
Horse Riding Insurance – This ensures you are covered for any personal damage you may inccur when riding horses. Importantly it covers the llegal liability to a third party for any damages and costs arising from your use of the insured horse up to a set amount. If you want to run an official business you will also need to look for insurance that can ( at the very least ) cover any injuries to people that ride your personally owned horses.
